DrChrono started on an iPad and it still shows
DrChrono, now part of EverHealth, is a cloud EHR and practice management system used by small and mid-sized practices across family medicine, paediatrics, psychiatry, therapy and a range of specialty clinics. It pioneered the EHR app for the iPad, and it was the first to put a full-featured EHR on the iPhone.
That origin still shapes the product. The chart is something a clinician holds. There are native iPad, iPhone and Apple Watch apps alongside the web version, and charting is built around specialty forms, custom macros, medical speech to text and drawing tools on the screen.
For a pain management clinic that fits the day exactly. The physician is moving between a procedure room and three examination rooms, and the note happens in the room rather than at eight in the evening.
The chart went mobile and the paperwork did not
Everything else in that clinic is still a desktop browser with eleven tabs open, and somebody sitting in front of it.
The medication agreement a patient signed last February is due for renewal and nothing will announce it. The state prescription monitoring database has its own login, its own search and no connection to anything in the clinic. An injection was booked as the first of three and the other two were never scheduled. An authorisation for a procedure went to the insurer and the answer will only ever appear on the insurer's portal. A claim was denied for a reason that reads as a code, with an appeal window running behind it.
The clinician's half of the day got faster and lighter. The other half did not move at all, and it is the half with the deadlines in it.

DrChrono automates the encounter well, and it is worth knowing how far that reaches before adding anything to it.
Charting runs on forms and specialty templates with custom macros behind them, so a repeated examination is a few taps rather than typing. EverHealth Scribe generates the clinical note using AI. Prior authorisation is built in and powered by CoverMyMeds, with prescribing through Surescripts, so the requests that travel over those networks travel on their own. Laboratory integrations bring results back into the chart, and RecordSync locates and exchanges records with other systems.
Each of those works because a route already exists: a network, an interface, a partner who agreed to connect.
Where no route exists, nothing happens. A state monitoring database is a government website with its own credentials. A payer's portal for procedure and imaging authorisations is a website. A durable medical equipment supplier's order tracker is a website. They hold the answers the clinic keeps asking for, and they publish them to a person with a login and to nobody else.
A pain clinic's follow-up can be a list instead of a memory
A person with a login is all those sites ask for, and the clinic has the logins already. What it does not have is somebody free at seven in the morning to work through them.
Tomorrow's patients set against the date of their last recorded monitoring check, so the prescriber spends the time checking rather than working out who needs it. Medication agreements reaching their anniversary inside the month, gathered with the renewal drafted and waiting for a signature.
Authorisation status read from each payer's site every morning, with anything pending more than three days raised while the procedure date can still be moved. Denied claims collected with the reason and the closing date on them, ordered by which window shuts first. The second injection in a series that was never booked, listed against the course the physician planned. Referrals sent out in March, checked against whether the patient was ever seen. Balances past their date, with the reminder written and waiting.
One boundary does not move. Gathering and comparing can run unattended. Anything that changes a clinical or billing record, or that reaches a patient, is prepared for a qualified person to review. Prescribing decisions and monitoring checks belong to the prescriber and stay there.
An agent can carry the logins the iPad never replaced
The clinic already solved the part that happens in front of the patient. What is left is the part that happens in front of a login screen, and it is still being done by hand between appointments.

Can it look up a controlled substance record for us?
No, and it should not. Querying a state prescription monitoring database is the prescriber's own act under their own credentials. What it can do is build the list of who is due a check before their appointment, so the prescriber spends the time checking rather than remembering.
Do the specialty forms and macros we built still matter?
Yes, and nothing here touches them. Those shape the note at the point of care, which is the part DrChrono already does well. The agent works the screens outside the chart and hands back a list.
