Returns became a supply chain running the other way
ReverseLogix is a returns management system, a category that barely existed as software until returns stopped being an exception. It is run by retailers, manufacturers and third-party logistics providers, in apparel, electronics, car parts and anything else that comes back often enough to need a process rather than a person.
What it holds is the return as a physical object with a history. Not the refund request, the unit. The RMA a shopper or a dealer raised, the label it travelled on, the condition it was found in at the dock, and where it went next: back to stock, onto a refurbishment bench, into a warranty repair, out to a liquidator, or into the bin.
That is a different job from the front-end portal a shopper sees. The portal starts the return. This runs the weeks afterwards, through a building, on behalf of whoever owns the stock.
Every returned unit is a small investigation
The volume is fine. It is the units that do not fit the flow that eat the week.
A pallet of dealer returns arrives against an RMA raised six weeks ago and half of it is not what the paperwork says. A high-value electronic comes back with a warranty claim, and whether the manufacturer will honour it depends on a serial number lookup on the manufacturer's site. A refurbished unit is ready to sell and somebody has to decide what to list it at, which means finding what the same model in the same grade is fetching this week. A carrier delivered something crushed, and the claim has a filing window measured in days.
The business-to-business side is worse. A retailer takes a deduction against an invoice for a returned shipment, and the reason code lives in that retailer's own supplier portal. Somebody has to open the portal, find the deduction, match it to units the dock physically received, and decide whether to dispute it before the window shuts.
Warranty and Recommerce end where the vendor's portal starts

Returns Initiation gives shoppers or dealers a branded portal to raise a claim, receive an RMA and get a label, with tracking and notifications going out on their own. Returns Processing runs the dock: receiving, inspection, and the disposition decision made on rules rather than on whoever is on shift. Warranty Repair Management follows one item from the claim through inspection and repair to the return shipment, which is the stretch most systems drop. The Recommerce module takes the units not going back to stock and routes them to refurbishment, recycling or resale on the rules you configure.
All of it works on the return once the return is in the system, and on rules written in advance.
What a rule cannot contain is what is true outside today. Whether the manufacturer's register still covers that serial. What that grade of refurbished unit is selling for on the marketplaces this week. Whether the carrier accepted the damage claim. Which deduction a retailer has just taken and on what grounds. Each of those sits behind somebody else's login, and each of them moves.
A refurbished unit can be priced by what it fetches today
The disposition decision was never short of rules. It was short of what is true today, and that sits on marketplaces, warranty registers and carrier claim sites a returns analyst already signs into.
Refurbished stock priced against live comparable listings on the marketplaces you actually resell through, re-checked the week it goes up rather than set once and forgotten. Warranty coverage confirmed by serial number on the manufacturer's register before an expensive repair is authorised, so the claims that were always going to be refused get refused first. Carrier damage claims followed to a decision on the carrier's claims site, with the ones about to time out named while the window is open.
The deductions are the quiet money. New chargebacks pulled from each retailer's supplier portal, matched against the units the dock recorded, and listed by dispute deadline. Recall notices watched on the manufacturer or the regulator's site, so a unit already sitting in the building gets held instead of restocked. Open dealer RMAs older than the agreed window set against what has physically arrived, so the pallet that was never sent is a question rather than a hole in the count.
Nothing in that list changes a record anywhere. It is reading, comparing, and telling somebody.
Reverse logistics has enough real work in it already
Three sites hold what is true this week: the marketplace, the warranty register and the retailer's portal. Opening them is a round, and the analyst making that round should be running the returns floor.

Our clients each use a different supplier portal. Does that still work?
Yes, and for a third-party logistics provider that is the normal case. It reads each portal in a browser rather than through an API, so a retailer with no feed is handled the same as one with a full integration. Each client is a login and a list of what to look for.
Could it change a disposition or overwrite a record in ReverseLogix?
No. It adds what it read and where it read it, dated, alongside your team's entries rather than on top of them. If a marketplace or a register disagrees with the file, that surfaces as a flag for a person to resolve, never as a silent edit.
