SigmaNEST decides how much of the sheet becomes money

In a fabrication shop the margin is decided before anything is cut. A sheet of stainless costs what it costs. Whether the parts on it come to seventy percent of that sheet or ninety is a nesting decision, made at a workstation by somebody who may be the only person in the building able to make it.

SigmaNEST, from SigmaTEK Systems, is the software that does the deciding. It nests and programs for sheet, coil and tube across cutting, punching, routing and bending, so one suite drives the laser, the plasma table, the punch, the tube cutter and the brake, and it keeps track of the remnants coming off each job.

The material has to exist. Somebody signs into two or three service center sites to see whether the gauge and grade are in stock this week and what they cost today, because the quote was built on last month's number. A customer issues a revised drawing on their engineering portal and the shop learns about it when a part does not fit. Mill test reports for the plate need collecting and filing against the job before it ships.

SimTrans hands the nest to the systems that will listen

SigmaTEK has built well past the nest itself, and a shop running only the CAD/CAM half is using a fraction of what it pays for.

A nest built on what a service center actually has this week is a different document from a nest built on hope.

Stock and pricing checked each morning against the grades and gauges the week's jobs call for, so a shortage appears at the nesting stage instead of at the machine. Remnants matched against tomorrow's parts, so the offcut in the rack gets cut before a full sheet is pulled. Mill test reports downloaded as they post and filed against the heat number and the job that consumed it.

Then the work that leaves the building. Powder coat and galvanizing status read off each vendor's page, so a ship date has something behind it. Customer engineering portals watched for revised drawings and new enquiries, since a revision found late is a cut sheet made twice. Outbound freight tracked for the customer who is going to ring and ask. Quotes that have gone quiet flagged by how long they have sat there.

One caution. Reading a portal and building a list can run with nobody watching. Committing a delivery date, or replying to a customer, belongs to a person.

The chasing gets done between programs

The programmer who can squeeze two more parts out of a sheet is the most expensive person in the building to have sitting on hold with a powder coater.

Will it order material or place a purchase order?

No. It reads the stock page and the pricing, and hands your buyer a list with the shortages and the price moves on it. Placing an order, or committing a delivery date to a customer, stays with a person.

We use SimTrans to talk to our ERP. Is this a replacement?

No, it works where SimTrans has nothing to talk to. SimTrans exchanges transactions with business systems that have an interface. A service center stock page and a finisher's job board are screens with a password, not systems, and those are what this reads.

Can it pick up drawing revisions from our customers?

It can watch a customer's engineering portal and report new or revised drawings and RFQs as they appear. What it does not do is program from them on its own. A revision goes to the programmer, who decides what it means for the nest.
