Automated Metabase Threshold Alerts

Every hour, WebRun opens Metabase, checks a saved question's latest result against the threshold you set, texts you through Twilio the moment it's breached, and exports the underlying result table to Google Drive.

In short

How do I get texted when a Metabase metric crosses a threshold?

WebRun checks a saved Metabase question every hour against the threshold you set. The moment the result breaches it, WebRun texts you the metric and its current value through Twilio, and exports the underlying result table to Google Drive, so you get an immediate alert plus the data behind it without opening a dashboard.

  • Threshold breaches trigger a text within the hour, not at next login
  • Every alert comes with the underlying data already exported
  • Only real breaches page you, not every routine check

Step by step

What does WebRun do on every run?

The exact actions WebRun takes, in order - in plain language, so you can adjust anything.

  1. WebRun signs in and gets to work

Opens metabase.com in a real browser with your saved login - no setup, no API keys.

  2. 1
Metabase - check the saved question
    metabase.com
WebRun in Metabase: check the saved question
WebRun opens Metabase to check the saved question.
    • Open the saved question or dashboard you're monitoring
    • Compare the latest result to the threshold you set
    • Note the exact value and how far it's over or under

Done when The question's latest result has been checked against threshold.

  3. 2
Twilio - text on a breach
    twilio.com
WebRun in Twilio: text on a breach
WebRun uses Twilio to text on a breach.
    • Send a text the moment the threshold is breached
    • Include the metric name and the current value

Done when A text has gone out for every breach.

  4. 3
Google Drive - export the underlying data
    drive.google.com
WebRun in Google Drive: export the underlying data
WebRun opens Google Drive to export the underlying data.
    • Export the underlying result table to the shared Drive folder
    • Name the file with the question and the run timestamp

Done when The underlying data for every breach is saved to Drive.

Questions, answered

Will it change the question or the threshold on its own?

No. WebRun only checks the result against the threshold you set and alerts on a breach. Editing the question or adjusting the threshold is left to you.

How often does it check?

Every hour by default, though you can tighten or loosen the check frequency to match how quickly the metric usually moves.

Do I get a text for every single check?

No. A text only goes out when the result actually crosses your threshold, so routine, in-range results don't page you.
